Mar 02 to Dec 08: SPX Flow Technology: Human Resources Director EMEA

  • SPX Corporation is a Fortune 500 multi-industry manufacturing leader and highly specialised engineered solutions provider. Worldwide revenues are $5.7 billion. HR Lead for the Flow Technology Segment responsible for 2900 EMEA employees.
  • Conducted the due diligence and successfully integrated three European and one global acquisition. Developed a template of HR practices to accelerate the introduction of SPX culture, Sarbanes Oxley HR compliance requirements, employment terms and working practices into the new businesses.
  • Undertook due diligence divestment of non-core commercial activities.
  • Key member of the management steering group reviewing the UK and German acquired and existing businesses, eight in total, to optimise performance. All businesses, with one exception, met performance and profit criteria within 12 months. One project engineering business doubled its revenue in a two year time frame.
  • Led major business restructuring activities to improve profitability and in support of changing customer requirements. Work included facility closures, manufacturing transfer and development of capabilities in low cost regions.
  • Co-ordinated the EMEA Flow Technology talent assessment and development activities. Ensured the business had the people and organisational environment to fulfil its business goals by talent attraction, retention and development activities.
  • Fostered the development of technical, managerial and leadership capabilities within the workforce. Adapted, developed and implemented corporate people development programmes for Europe including leadership, value based selling and lean principles.
  • Responsible for providing a constructive communications and compensations environment which ensured employee engagement. European lead in Works Council discussions.  
  • Member of the SPX European HR Council contributing to corporate policy development and implementation planning.

Sept 99 to Mar 2002: PBi Consulting Limited: Managing Director

Set up a business development consultancy. Client work included:

  • Project manager of a $16.5m programme to set up a European contact centre for Merrill Lynch’s private banking group.
  • Interim management and marketing expertise to venture capital start-up opportunities and IT companies.

1990 to Aug 1999: CARGILL Plc, Cobham, Surrey

  • Subsidiary of a $56 billion global commodity trader and food processor.
  • European Training Manager 1998- 1999
    Nine months on assignment with USA parent to experience best practice business and people development activities.
    • Devised the strategy to decentralize and out source training.
    • Introduced customer value programmes.
  • Project Manager 1996 – 1998
    Responsible for the pilot test site of a worldwide HR information systems project. Developed a repeatable model for other international locations covering a 40,000 employee headcount. The project scope encompassed time and attendance recording, payroll, HR and financial accounts reconciliation.
  • UK Human Resources Manager 1990– 1996
    Provided HR Lead support to diverse business lines.
    • Relocated UK head office.
    • HR Lead in set up of a new UK financial trading business.
    • Assessment and rationalization of 450 person company acquisition.
    • Consolidated six product lines into a single customer service centre.

1985 to 1990: BIS BANKING SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL, Wimbledon, London

  • BIS Banking Systems (now part of MISYS) a leading supplier of software products and services to the Worldwide financial community.
  • World-wide Head of Personnel
    Developed the compensation framework and people development environment to enable the rapid global organic/acquisition growth of the company. Headcount rose from 250 to 1050 in a five year period.

  • Manager, Management Development and Training 1983 – 1985
    Established the UK wide management training and development activity.
  • Manager, Human Resources 1980 – 1983
    Generalist HR service to a R&D and manufacturing facility for ATM’s.
