Editor and writer – former BBC head of international relations and broadcasting adviser to the European Commission (London office). I offer a range of skills developed during thirty years in communications:
- writing, editing and rewriting for print and the web
- producing reports, research and position papers, policy briefs, information materials and press releases
- planning internal and external communications
- developing house styles
- advising on and engaging in media relations, especially radio and TV
- training in writing skills and language awareness
My enthusiasm is for plain English and my strength is in presenting complex ideas and information in clear, easily read, jargon-free language.
RECENT PROJECTS
- European Agency for Safety and Health at Work: writing reports, abstracts, summaries, articles and press releases for print and web, including substantial projects in 2004 and 2005 (2003 to date).
- Macmillan Oxford: editing and proofing Caribbean Narratives of Belonging: Fields of Relations, Sites of Identity (collection of 15 anthropology papers) for Warwick University Caribbean Studies series (2004 to date).
- European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions: nine projects editing (and proofing) policy and research papers; also writing web pages, and writing and editing text for the Foundation’s European Industrial Relations Observatory. Just finished editing ‘Industrial Relations in Europe 2004’ under second rolling contract (2002 to date).
- Henson Editorial: editing the English text of The Chinese Link (Pearson); also marking up for indexing ‘The Style and Structure of the Koran’ (Vol. III, of IV, of The Koran: Critical Concepts in Islamic Studies, Routledge Curzon); and ‘The Nature of Human Nature’, (Vol. II of Nature: Critical Concepts in the Social Sciences, Routledge Curzon). (2004 to date).
- Portcullis Public Affairs: editing/rewriting a promotional website (2004).
- Premier Relations PR: writing and editing promotional material for a (third party) client – a major branding and marketing business; also writing a PR proposal for a local authority project (2004).
- Face Europe (Stockholm): editorial support and writing the summary report for a conference in Dublin on equality and diversity in broadcasting, under the EU Equal programme (2004).
- Green Button Software: editing support material (2004).
FREELANCING AND CONSULTANCY (1993 to 2004)
European Commission Broadcasting adviser to the European Commission’s Representation in London for ten years (1994 to 2004). This work included editing a series of some 60 articles for the UK web site during 2003 (1994 – 2004).
BBC Television Wrote the weekly Television Programme Review for the Director of Television (1993-2002).
European Commission (DG Development) Editing and rewriting articles on international development and relations between the EU and developing countries for the Courier magazine (Brussels) – reworking pieces produced by technocrats with excellent knowledge of development issues but poor writing (and language) skills (2001 – 2003).
Tessc (Rome/Brussels communications company) Editing and rewriting texts and providing editorial support and advice; also UK correspondent, monitoring food safety and smoking prevention campaigns and advising on media relations (2002 – 2003).
Charlemagne Group Associate Director of the Charlemagne Group, European business and public affairs consultancy (1996 – 2003).
EIC (Euro Info Centre) network Press and public relations officer for the European business advice centres in the UK, developing a press kit and dealing with the written and broadcast media (1999 – 2000).

CAREER HISTORY
BBC (1976-1993)
International Relations - various posts to Head (1986-93). Managed BBC liaison with the European Institutions and with foreign broadcasters and governments. Monitored developments and legislative proposals within the EU and briefed senior BBC management. Developed verbal and written briefing skills.
World Service (1976-86). Producer in the Vietnamese language service and (1978) youngest head of a language service. Developed editorial judgement on highly sensitive programme output. During eight years in the post spent a total of two years on BBC secondments: producer, BBC Yugoslav Service (1985); World Service management (1981 and 1984); reporter and producer BBC Radio Cambridgeshire (1983/4); BBC Secretariat (1981/2).
FREELANCE JOURNALISM (1974-76)
Developed journalistic skills on contract and as a freelance: writing and reporting for the BBC (Radio 4 and World Service) and Middle East International. Travelled in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Oman.
TEACHING, RELIEF WORK AND DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION (1971-74)
Developed multicultural awareness and international outlook:
- Teaching English in Delhi (1971);
- Refugee relief work in Calcutta for the Church of North India and the Society of Friends (Quakers) after the outbreak of hostilities in East Pakistan / Bangladesh (1971-72);
- Promoting international development and fund raising in higher education for the World University Service (UK) (1972-74).
EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Member, British Association of Communicators in Business and the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (associate). Read French and have checked and edited translations. Travelled extensively in Africa and Asia, for the BBC and independently. St John’s College, Oxford (BA/MA Theology 1966-70). Millfield School (‘A’ level Latin, Greek and Ancient History).
PERSONAL
Recreational interests: choral music, tennis, cricket, golf and swimming. Status: married, excellent health, clean driving license.
